Signs And Symptoms of Osteoarthritis

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

OsteoarthritisOsteoarthritis is a group of diseases and mechanical abnormalities that involve degradation of the joints. Sometimes, the degradation can include articular cartilage as well as the subchondral bone that is next to the joint. This condition is the most common form of arthritis and it is also referred to as degenerative arthritis or degenerative joint disease. This disease normally affects the hands, the feet and the spine. It also affects the large bearing joints such as the knees and the hips.

Clinical symptoms of this condition include pain, sharp ache or a burning sensation in the affected muscles and tendons. Other symptoms are stiffness, inflammation and a creaking or a crackling noise when you move or touch the affected joint. You may also experience muscle spasm as well as contractions in the tendons.

Osteoarthritis can lead to loss of cartilage; a protein matrix that lubricates and cushions the joints. When the bone surfaces are less protected as a result of loss of cartilage, the subchondral bone may be exposed and damaged. The re-growths may lead to a proliferation of ivory-like dense reactive bone in the central areas of the cartilage loss. This process is referred to as eburnation.

Although this condition is as a result of trauma, heredity has also been linked as another cause. This disease often affects several members of the same family. Recent studies show high prevalence of the disease among siblings especially identical twins. Sixty percent of osteoarthritis is said to be as a result of genetic factors. Available treatments for this condition include manual therapy, exercise and medications.

Obesity Treatment and Complete Cure

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Obesity is one of the greatest health challenges of the 21st century. Obesity is defined simply as too much body fat. It is different from being overweight, which means weighing too much. Obesity is increased to a point where it is associated with certain health conditions or increased mortality. Obesity is a serious problem that affects millions of people. The most common measure of obesity is the body mass index or BMI. Obesity occurs over time when you eat more calories than you use. The balance between calories-in and calories-out differs for each person. Factors that might tip the balance include your genetic makeup, overeating, eating high-fat foods and not being physically active. Obesity, especially central obesity (male-type or waist-predominant obesity), is an important risk factor for the “metabolic syndrome” (“syndrome X”), the clustering of a number of diseases and risk factors that heavily predispose for cardiovascular disease. These are diabetes mellitus type 2, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, and triglyceride levels (combined hyperlipidemia). An inflammatory state is present, which — together with the above — has been implicated in the high prevalence of atherosclerosis (fatty lumps in the arterial wall), and a prothrombotic state may further worsen cardiovascular risk. Being obese increases your risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, arthritis and some cancers. (more…)

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Everyday, we read the headlines of the latest daily newspaper, television broadcast or Internet news site about horrific home invasions and violent crimes that might have been forestalled by a home security system. Therefore, in the dangerous day and time in which we live, finding a good home security system is very important. Such system will assure you a peaceful and safe haven. Moreover, a home security system can save you money on your homeowner’s insurance costs. Since home alarms protect your belongings and prevent losses, this makes your home less of an insurance risk. Many security systems will qualify, but specifically those that contact fire, police, and medic in the event of an emergency.

When you select a home security system, you’re putting the security of yourself and your family in the care of this system, so it’s important to make an informed decision when choosing your home’s protection. When choosing a home security system, there are four factors you should consider: price, features, service and effectiveness. Decide on the level of protection you want, make sure the system being offered meets your needs and don’t be afraid to ask questions of your home security system provider. Make sure you find a reliable home security company like ADT Massachusetts. ADT monitoring system has been widely known as the best in the field. Go to FOX news site for more information.
